BK3T3102 Investeringsanalyse & portfoliomanagement (5)

Financial markets are to some extent efficient, which means there are very few obvious bargains. Nevertheless, thousands of professionals around to world are trying to beat the market through actively managing investment portfolios on behalf of their clients. When evaluating the added value of a strategy, or the performance of an investment portfolio, an important challenge is to separate investment skill from mere luck.

In this course, we cover the choice and evaluation of different investment strategies. We will address questions such as: How is the Investment industry organized? Is it possible to beat the market through active portfolio management? What is the role of information in efficient markets? What is the difference between fundamental and technical analysis? What is factor investing? What are the benefits and risks of alternative investments? How to evaluate fund performance? How do fees impact fund returns?

Learning goals

  1. Explain the trade-off between risk and return and how it differs across asset classes
  2. Outline the investment process, including common investor objectives, constraints and strategies
  3. Analyse strategies and fee structure across different type of funds (Mutual Funds, Index Funds, ETFs and Hedge Funds)
  4. Evaluate the evidence and assumptions of stock market efficiency and its impact on the investment industry: active vs passive investing strategies
  5. Debate the pro’s and cons of different forms of investment analysis such as fundamental analysis, technical analysis and factor investing
  6. Assess investment performance based on a variety of measures such as Sharpe ratio, Treynor ratio, Jensen’s alpha and Information Ratio
  7. Understand the benefits and risks of alternative investments such as Private Equity and Real Estate

BK3T3103 BSc Project Analyseren en investeren (7)

The core of the project is research, and what type of research will vary by track. The Bachelor Project follows all steps of a research cycle: A managerial problem, a knowledge question, review of evidence, research design, data collection, data analysis, answer to the question, recommendation to management. “Management” should be read as “stakeholder from practice”. The outcome can be a design, hypothesis test, conceptual framework, and in all cases is translated into an answer to a managerial problem. The data can be quantitative or qualitative, primary or secondary, empirical or simulated.

To successfully complete the Bachelor Project, we assume that students participate in the course Advanced Research Skills (ARS, previously ARM, B3101) in parallel or have already completed this course. Moreover, we assume that students have active knowledge of the concepts covered in Research Project (BT2103) or Onderzoeksproject (BK2103). Lastly, the course builds on a lot of knowledge that you should have acquired in previous methods-related courses (e.g., statistics, mathematics). It is your responsibility to dust off this knowledge. Look at material from these courses when things are not top of mind. Do not expect your supervisor to act like a tutor on such topics.

  7. Critically evaluate and discuss research results
